Beekeeping and Honey Production

About This Skill

Turn Bees into a Productive and Profitable Enterprise! This programme equips students with the practical skills required to establish, manage and maintain healthy honeybee colonies for commercial honey production. Trainees learn bee biology and behaviour, hive types, apiary establishment, colony management, seasonal management and the safe handling of bees and beekeeping equipment. Students participate in practical activities including hive preparation and placement, colony inspection, identifying the queen and worker bees, swarm management, feeding, pest and disease control, and honey harvesting. They also learn how to extract, filter, process, store and package honey hygienically, while exploring other valuable bee products such as beeswax and propolis. Upon completion, participants will be able to establish and manage an apiary, produce quality honey and develop marketable bee products. The programme provides practical opportunities for agribusiness, self-employment and value addition while also developing an understanding of the important role of bees in crop pollination and sustainable agriculture.
